Independance Day

Last Tuesday (July 4th) was a holiday, so I didn't have to go to the lab, and had time to wander in Santa Cruz a bit more. I wanted to see a 4th of July parade, but it seems they didn't have any in Santa Cruz, so I had to go to Watsonville ('the world's shortest parade') or Wilder Ranch State Park ('old-fashioned July 4th, with patriotic music, games and contests'). Delia (my flatmate) had left on Monday afternoon to see friends in San Francisco, and as no buses were going to either of these places, I decided to walk to Wilder Ranch State Park, which didn't seem to far on the map (at least closer than Watsonville). I walked for about half an hour on Western Drive, to then realise that if I really wanted to go to the park, I'd have to walk for at least 1.5 mile on a freeway/highway/motorway, so instead of doing so I walked back home via Safeway (same chain supermarket as in the UK??) to buy some food. I waited for a bus to go back home, but instead of a bus, a UCSC shuttle arrived, the only person in it being the driver. Buses were not running at all as it was a holiday, while I thought there'd be a weekend service at least. My feet were hurting (it wasn't a great idea to walk with flip-flops!), so i'd rather take a bus than walk up the hill to get home. I spent the rest of the day reading, watching TV, and not doing anything particular, which was nice! I didn't even go to see the fireworks on the beach, my feet still painful and no car to get there, but I was able to see some from home, and as some would know, I'm not very fond of fireworks...
